Claudia De Salvo – Maps, 2013, White Box Gallery (Queensland College of Art)
This is the home we lived in.
This is where I went to school.
This is the church where Zia got married.
This is the church your uncle and I snuck out of every Sunday.
Maps have the capacity represent our cultural, historical connection to the land. This project is a physical manifestation of my emotional connection to a point on a map. A place I have never been, yet have explored in explicit detail thanks to the virtual representations made possible through modern mapping technology. My experience and understanding of my cultural heritage are built on memories and stories, passed down through generations and contextualised through street view.
